On World Television Day, Prasar Bharati, India’s national public broadcaster, made a significant foray into the digital streaming world with the launch of its new over-the-top (OTT) platform, Waves.
Sources told India Today that Waves was unveiled as there was a requirement for an OTT platform with “Indian DNA”.
Marketed as “Family Entertainment Ki Nayi Lehar”, Waves promises to cater to a broad audience with a wide array of multilingual content.
There is no charge for downloading the platform and viewing content, except for a few premier ones.
Waves offers over 65 live channels, movies, interactive games, live events, and even online shopping, positioning itself as a one-stop entertainment hub.
Available in 12 languages, including Hindi, English, Tamil, Marathi, and Assamese, the platform is set to bring inclusive entertainment to a diverse range of viewers, including those in rural areas, through the BharatNet infrastructure.
Gaurav Dwivedi, CEO of Prasar Bharati, said, “There is a need for the public broadcaster to remain present on all platforms as we have to make information and content available for the audiences all across our large country.”
‘Fauji 2.0’, which is a modern adaptation of the iconic 1980s Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Fauji’ will be showcased on the platform.
Meanwhile, the ‘Kakbhushundi Ramayana’, a new original show which started on DD National will also be available on Waves.
